What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

October 13, 20267 min read

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of improving how your brand appears inside the answers that generative AI engines produce. Where SEO is about ranking in a list of links, GEO is about being present, accurate, and well-positioned in the AI's response itself: the shortlist it recommends, the comparison it draws, the description it gives of who you are.

(A quick note to avoid confusion: "GEO" the acronym refers to the general discipline. GEO Score is our software product that measures and helps improve your performance in that discipline. When we say GEO below, we mean the practice.)

Why it exists now

Generative engines changed how discovery works. Instead of returning a page of links and letting the user decide, an AI assistant reads across many sources and produces one synthesized answer. For a huge and growing share of informational and commercial questions — "best X for Y", "alternatives to Z", "which tool should I use for…" — that answer is now the deciding moment. If your brand isn't in it, the buyer may never reach your site at all.

That makes AI answers a distribution channel in their own right. And like any channel, it can be understood, measured, and influenced — which is what GEO is for.

How GEO differs from SEO

They overlap, but they optimize for different machines with different logic:

  • SEO optimizes a page's rank in a search engine's results — driven by keywords, backlinks, technical performance, and freshness. The output is a position in a list.
  • GEO optimizes a brand's presence in a generated answer — driven by how clearly the model understands your brand as an entity, how often and how favorably you're cited in sources it trusts, and how well structured your information is. The output is whether (and how) you're mentioned.

Different machines, different logic. The signals that win a Google ranking aren't the ones that win a mention.

The practical consequence: a brand can rank #1 on Google and still be absent from ChatGPT's recommendation, because the signals that got it to the top of Google aren't the same signals the model weighs when generating an answer.

The core levers of GEO

GEO isn't one tactic — it's a set of reinforcing signals. The main ones:

  • Entity clarity. Make it unambiguous what your brand is, what category it serves, and what makes it distinct. Models recommend brands they can confidently define. Vague positioning reads as noise.
  • Being cited in trusted sources. AI answers are shaped by reviews, directories, reputable articles, documentation, and community discussion. Earning accurate mentions in those places is how you earn mentions in the answer.
  • Structured data. Schema markup and clean, machine-readable content help engines parse what you offer and describe it correctly rather than guessing.
  • Technical accessibility. If AI crawlers can't read your site — blocked bots, missing metadata, unparseable pages — you've removed yourself from the one source you fully control.
  • Coverage across engines. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity rely on different training data and retrieval. You need presence in each, not just one.

Why it matters in 2026

Two things make GEO urgent rather than optional. First, buyer behavior has already shifted — asking an assistant is now a normal first step, not a novelty. Second, the field is early: most brands aren't actively optimizing for it yet, so the barrier to standing out is lower than it will ever be again. Models also tend to reinforce the associations they already hold, which means early, consistent presence pays compounding returns.

Where to start

GEO begins with a baseline: what do the engines actually say about your category today, and where does your brand land? You measure your mention rate, your position relative to competitors, the sentiment of how you're described, and which rivals the AI names instead of you. From that baseline, the levers above become a prioritized to-do list rather than guesswork. You can't optimize an answer you've never read.
